With the cold weather upon us, kids and families flock to the mountains, lakes, and (if we’re fortunate enough) their own backyards to play. While these cold-time activities are special and fun, there are some practical safety tips to keep family-time safe. The biggest tip that we can offer is: NEVER GO ALONE. Here are some other helpful tips:

Santa Mobile Schedule
Santa is coming to town! The sound of music, bright lights and lots of helpers move about with a Ho-Ho-Ho ringing through the communities each December for this annual event. Santa will be visiting local Yelm neighborhoods, including Rainier and Lake Laurence, Thursday, December 10. Watch for Santa between 5:30pm and 7pm.
Santa at the Prairie Hotel!
Santa is back to see the children at the Yelm’s Prairie Hotel in the Bald Hills Terrace Room. Come visit Santa Saturday, December 12 4:30pm – 8pm and enjoy yummy hot chocolate, coffee, candy canes and cookies.
Stuffed Animal Donations Needed!
The need for stuffed animal donations is critical this year. S.E. Thurston Fire is seeking donations of new or like-new stuffed animals to comfort and support local children in crisis situations. Please donate new or like-new stuffed animals to the fire station located at 709 Mill Rd SE, Yelm, WA 98597.
Please donate non-perishable food, toys, gifts, and like-new clothing for families and children of all ages to your local drop-off location.
Southeast Thurston Fire Auxiliaries for Yelm and Rainier areas is kicking off their annual holiday gift and food drive for families in need. We need your help to gather the following donations: Like-new clothing, toys and games, like-new coats of all sizes, full-size and travel-size shampoo and soap, and non-perishable food items. Please see complete list below.

Please consider donating to Yelm Food Cooperative’s “Gift of Gobble” and provide a turkey dinner for a needy family this holiday season. Nominations are open!
For the past few years the Yelm Food Cooperative has collected donations that help feed our community’s hungry. Their food drive is aptly named “Gift of Gobble” and nominations for this year’s gifts are now open. A donation of $60 will feed an entire family of six.
The holidays are on the way and that means colder weather and tougher days for our community’s most vulnerable and needy. During this festive time of year, please remember to donate to your local food banks. Help make the holidays feel brighter, warmer, and more secure for those who need it the most.

S.E. Thurston Fire (Yelm & Rainier Fire Department) rushed to a Yelm woman’s aid when car burst into flames. She escaped the car just before the front end was fully engulfed. SETFA successfully extinguished the fire. No one was hurt.

Every year a group of burn survivors between the ages of 13-15 years old are selected to attend the Fire Fighters International Burn Camp. This year, local Yelm resident Bryanna, 15, was selected and traveled to Washington D.C. to attend the camp.
Sponsored by the International Association of Firefighters Charitable foundation, she explored and experienced Washington DC’s museums, US Naval Academy, and more. More importantly, Byanna, and other survivors like her, where able to share and interact with each other, sharing their stories and how they were burned.
This one-week camp is truly a life-changing and affirming trip designed to create strong support systems, and to remind these young survivors that they are never alone.
