Stay Safe on the Water: River & Lake Safety Tips from SE Thurston

Fire Department
Serving Yelm, Rainier & the South Thurston Community
Here in South Thurston County, we’re lucky to have access to some of Washington’s most beautiful rivers and lakes—like the Nisqually River, Clear Lake, and Offut Lake. Whether you’re boating, fishing, swimming, or just cooling off on a hot day, water safety should always come first.
Each year, SE Thurston Fire responds to emergency calls on and around our local waterways. Many of these incidents are preventable with a few simple precautions. Here’s how you and your family can stay safe this season.

Always Wear a Life Jacket
  • Washington state law requires all children under age 13 to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when on boats under 19 feet.
  • Life jackets should fit snugly and be properly buckled—don’t just sit on them or hold them.
  • Even strong swimmers can be overwhelmed by cold water shock, strong currents, or unexpected weather.
Know the Risks of Local Rivers
  • Rivers like the Nisqually may look calm on the surface but often have fast currents, slippery rocks, and debris underneath.
  • Water from snowmelt is cold year-round—even on hot summer days. Sudden immersion can lead to cold water shock, rapid exhaustion, and drowning.
  • Avoid swimming in rivers without lifeguards or clear entry/exit points.
Boat Responsibly
  • Always check your equipment, fuel levels, and emergency gear before heading out.
  • Don’t overload your boat—follow weight limits for safety and stability.
  • Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • File a float plan with someone on land—tell them where you’re going and when you plan to return.
Supervise Children at All Times
  • Keep young children within arm’s reach near any body of water.
  • Never assume someone else is watching them.
  • Designate a “Water Watcher”—an adult whose only job is to supervise swimmers (no phones or distractions).
Be Weather-Aware
  • Sudden changes in wind or weather can make boating and swimming dangerous.
  • Check forecasts before heading out and be prepared to leave the water quickly if conditions change.
  • If you hear thunder, get off the water immediately and seek shelter.
If You See Trouble, Don’t Hesitate to Call 911
Early intervention saves lives, whether it’s a stranded swimmer, a capsized boat, or a missing person. SE Thurston Fire’s trained water rescue teams are ready to respond—but every second counts.

Enjoy the Water, Respect the Risks
Rivers and lakes are part of what makes life in Yelm and Rainier so special. With a little planning and awareness, you can make every outing safe.
