Tree Lighting at the Capitol

There were 18 rural fire districts from across the state at the tree lighting ceremony to receive a check and a bag full of toys to hand out to needy families in their communities.

Chief Mark King of SE Thurston Fire Authority received a check and a bag of toys from Secretary of State Kim Wyman on behalf of Holiday Kids Tree Project Association, sponsored by the Association of Washington Businesses in Olympia.

The funds will be used to put a smile on the faces of children in Yelm, Rainier, and the surrounding area with Christmas dinners, clothes, toys and games.

The schools of Yelm and Rainier will provide a list of families struggling this Holiday season to the SE Thurston Fire Authority.

This year, a 30-foot Noble Fir came from the Weyerhauser Tree Farm. The tree is decorated with 7,000 lights, ornaments, dolls, and stuffed animals. The choir performed Christmas music, candy canes were handed out, and children talked with Santa.

When the tree is taken down, the dolls and stuffed animals along with a book are donated to the children’s hospital.

Time to Check Your Batteries!

Every fall, like clock-work, the time change rushes upon us, bringing with it a reminder to change and test the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s almost daylight saving time. The National Fire Protection Association reports that 71% of smoke alarms which failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries. Please take the time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Daylight saving is nearly here. When you set your clock back on November 5th, remember to check the batteries in your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. And be sure to remind your friends and family to check their alarms, as well!

Firefighters Hand Out Candy

SE Thurston Fire Authority (Yelm & Rainier Fire Department) was out in the city of Yelm to ensure the safety of Trick or Treat on Halloween night.

Chief Mark King, Lieutenant Ann Holeman, Firefighter/Public Education Coordinator Tony Brosco, and career and volunteer Firefighters/EMT were out in the community to make sure the children had a safe and fun Halloween.

The fire trucks and emergency vehicles were equipped with candy and Firefighters/EMT. The fire truck made a path through the neighborhoods of Yelm, firefighters making stops to hand out candy to kids.

The Yelm Firefighter IAFF Local 3626 and an anonymous group donated the candy.
