Serving Yelm, Rainier & the Greater South Thurston Area
As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, families across South Thurston County are preparing to kick off summer with barbecues, camping trips, and outdoor fun. While we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country, it’s also a time to keep safety top of mind, especially with increased travel, open flames, and recreational activity.
SE Thurston Fire Department is here to help you celebrate safely. Here are some important tips to protect yourself, your loved ones, and our community this Memorial Day weekend.
Grill & BBQ Safety
Backyard grilling is a holiday staple—but it’s also one of the top causes of home fires this time of year.
-
Keep grills at least 10 feet away from buildings, overhangs, and fences
-
Never leave a grill unattended while in use
-
Make sure the grill is clean and grease-free before cooking
-
Keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby just in case
-
For propane grills: check for gas leaks before lighting
Campfire & Outdoor Burning Tips
Planning a weekend camping trip or backyard bonfire? Know the local burn rules and always practice safe burning.
-
Use only designated fire pits or approved burn areas
-
Keep a bucket of water and a shovel nearby
-
Fully extinguish your fire: drown, stir, and repeat until cold
